Dr. Richard Tonks
I was motivated to get into the dental profession to provide ongoing care for people, hopefully in my local community. I was seeing a patient of mine for routine care today and discussing how I first started seeing him when I employed his daughter as a dental nurse, she left my employment some years later to take maternity leave and her son is now 28! That patient has needed very little dental work over that period. That gives me quite a ‘buzz’.
Richard graduated in 1980 from Bristol Dental School, worked in Germany for 15 months then returned to the UK to set up his own practice in 1983. This was in Rugby, Warwickshire which he then sold in 2012.
Richard gained his Diploma in General Dental Practice (DGDP) by examination at the Royal College of Surgeons in London in 1997.
Outside of general dentistry Richard has an interest in Orthodontics. When he’s not working, he enjoys running and cycling.
Our practice
Whilst certain complex cases can only be treated satisfactorily with more standard procedures, an increasing number of problems can indeed now be treated by the continually evolving and advancing system that is Invisalign.
By careful case selection, planning and some highly advanced computer technology available at 41 South Bar, many previously impossible cases can now be treated to very high levels of quality using simple clear plastic ‘aligners’ over a period of one to two years, with no need for braces.

How does Invisalign® work?
Invisalign treatment gives super and discreet results. To summarise – this means no ‘train tracks’, simply clear aligners that cannot easily be seen. If you’re eating, you simply remove the aligners and pop them back in once you’re finished.
In order to achieve the quickest results, you should wear the aligners for 20+ hours per day. However, if that is not possible, the procedure will just take a little longer to complete. Depending on your individual requirements, you may need to come into the practice more than once to get fitted for a new brace as your teeth start to straighten.
